Major Event

This is right after and they are singing their hearts out...
ok, ok your welcome !

An almost disaster prevented with the Carolina Wren Family.   As you know they hatched 2 babies in my staghorn fern and have been working oh so hard at taking good care of them. This morning while watering some plants near the fern, one of the babies decided to leave the nest, fell to the grass, the nest is only about 5 ft . off the ground.. and no they're not ready to fly...
Mom and Dad were frantic, baby was wondering what all the fuss was about and Grandma (that would be me) was having trouble breathing!  It's only about 15 feet to the edge of the wall of the lake.. I grabbed a soft towel, Mama is  screaming for Daddy, he's off getting grubs and worms of course. It took 2 tries to get that little thing, got it back in the nest, and all is well... Oh, I can breath again.

  1. So,is it true? Is a bird in the hand worth two in the bush? Nice save, Brabra!

  2. You're amazing! I probably would have let the poor thing die - I wouldn't have known what to do! Great job, Barbra!

  6. Oh no!!! So glad the little one wasn't hurt though. I see that one will be an independent little thing, yes? Thank you for saving him Barbra Joan. So glad you thought of the towel too. I might not have and attempted to do the same thing with bare hands! I think I've heard that babies are sometimes rejected if they smell of humans, so that could have been a bad thing! And look at that gorgeous photo! My oh my! Florida is indeed a beautiful place!

  8. sorry about the post above, it's a bit early!
I'll try again.... I confess to carrying a towel in my car, just for the purpose of saving critters, especially turtles crossing the roads.
Also Sherry, it's a myth about touching a baby bird, they aren't rejected. A towel thrown over it is so much easier to get than with your bare hands.. But if you have no choice, go for it.. and if the mother rejects it, report her to the DCF. (Dept. Childrens Welfare) BJ
